Places we love

What makes a place? It’s people, its energy, or how you feel there? And what if you feel great in a shitty place, is that possible? We all know of people miserable in the same place as someone else who isn’t miserable.

I like Vienna but there’s thousands who don’t. I like Switzerland but there’s also thousands who don’t. There’s places I’m not crazy about but others would die for. You’d say, well at least this way there’s a balance, but too many people love Italy and Spain and therefore they’re overwhelmed with tourists and illegal immigrants, or should I say migrants?

Europeans can live in just about every European country and so they do. We have Germans in Italy, Brits in Spain, Dutch in Italy, and so on. Why do Brits like Spain so much and why Germans Italy? And what’s up with the Dutch in Italy? Is it that it’s different, that it’s affordable? What appeals?

Perhaps because I’ve lived all my life in less developed regions, I appreciate developed countries more. I have a lot of the “what the fuck is this shit” experience when visiting certain countries. Do we like certain places because they like us or is that irrelevant?

I like Vienna but I don’t think Vienna cares if I’m there or not, and I like Switzerland and I’m not sure it cares if I’m there or not. So it can only be about my personal experience, which says right now I like it here, even if I don’t know why.
